Matilda the Welsummer's First Egg

Matilda the Welsummer's first egg.

I am delighted to report that Matilda, my 30 week old Welsummer pullet, has just laid her first egg.

Over the past couple of weeks it has been apparent that Matilda has been more vocal and assertive than previously. Maybe that was a sign of things to come.

The first egg arrived last Thursday, 11th November 2016. Matilda also laid an egg on Friday and one late yesterday afternoon. She has not laid an egg today, but that's hardly surprising giving the lateness of yesterday's egg. I expect she'll lay again tomorrow.

Matilda hasn't figured out how to use the nestboxes inside the chicken loft, instead preferring to lay her eggs on the floor.

Matilda the Welsummer.

Her eggs are slightly freckled and a bit paler than I expected. They have blotches of lighter pigment on the shell. They are small, but perfectly formed. I am sure they will get larger as she gets a bit more practice at laying. I am told that they taste very good, but I've yet to try one for myself.

Matilda's first egg is shown in the image above.

It would be nice if she spurred Star, my 30 week old Cream Legbar pullet, into laying her first egg.
